Road Surface & Conditions: Narrow 2-lane asphalt mountain highway with sharp hairpins, avalanche-protection galleries, and high-altitude tunnels.

★ Must-See Highlight

Crossing the Hasilegen Tunnel where perennial snow banks line both sides of the roadway even in midsummer.

⚠️ Driver Safety Note

Use lower gears (engine braking) on long mountain descents. Avoid excessive continuous braking to prevent brake pad overheating.

Best Photo Stop: Dushanzi Canyon observation bridge and the panoramic overlook above Hasilegen avalanche snow shed.
Foreigner Checkpoints & Permits

The primary G217 corridor is open to international passport holders with valid visas. When arriving at county-level police checkpoints (Dushanzi, Qiao’erma, Bayanbulak), use the manual inspection lane and roll down all windows.

Required Documents
  • Valid Chinese Driver’s License or Temporary Driving Permit (C1/C2)
  • Passport with valid Chinese entry visa (Certain military side-valleys require Frontier Permit 边防证 if deviating from G217)
  • Vehicle restriction: Passenger vehicles with 7 seats or fewer ONLY (No large RVs, trailers, or commercial coaches)

Elevation & Acclimatization
Peak Elevation:3,400m (Hasilegen Pass Tunnel)

Rapid ascent from Dushanzi basin (700m) to over 3,400m at the snow pass within 3 hours. Rapid temperature drop of 15°C–20°C.

Safety Advice
  • Pack windproof thermal layers and winter down jackets even when traveling in July/August.
  • Keep tire pressure checked before ascending; high altitude causes tire pressure fluctuations.
  • Beware of sudden mountain rain turning into wet sleet or black ice near tunnel entrances.
Fuel & EV Supercharging
Fuel Stations

Sinopec and PetroChina service stations located in Dushanzi, Qiao’erma, Narat intersection, Bayanbulak, and Kuqa. 92# and 95# gasoline always in stock.

EV Fast-Charging (DC)

State Grid (国家电网) fast-charging hubs deployed at primary highway rest areas. Due to cold mountain temperatures, expect 15-20% EV battery range drop.

Pro-tip: Top off fuel or battery to 100% in Dushanzi and Bayanbulak before entering mountain gorge passes.
